FAQs

What is Nightline?

Nightline is student run listening and information service operating every night of term time to provide valuable support to other students. We’re here to listen to you talk about anything that’s on your mind and aim to provide you with any information you might request.

Who calls Nightline?
Lots of different people. There is no such thing as a typical Nightline caller and we receive all kinds of calls about all kinds of topics. A problem can never be too big or too small for us to talk about and we’re also here for you if you just want a chat or the number of a taxi company. Nightline is for everyone who has something on their mind.

What can I phone Nigthline about?
You can talk to Nightline about anything. We're here whether you need information about anything from a taxi company or local takeaway to support groups for eating disorders or self harm. If you would like to talk about a difficult day or something that is worrying you, we'll be there for you whatever it is you want to talk about. Thanks to our volunteers, there is always someone available and nothing is too trivial or too big to talk to us about.

Who answers calls?
All Nightliners are student volunteers from the University of Nottingham who have received extensive training in listening and communication skills through the university. Nightline is an anonymous service so the identity of our volunteers is not revealed and you will not know who you are speaking to.

How can I contact Nightline?
Nightline is contactable by phone (0115 951 4985), our Instant Messaging Service on this website and you can e-mail us at nightlineanon@nottingham.ac.uk .

When can I contact Nightline?
Our lines are open from 7pm to 8am every night of term time and we also answer Instant Messages and Skype calls in that time. If you wish to contact us during the daytime you can e-mail us at nightlineanon@nottingham.ac.uk and someone will respond to your e-mail within 48 hours. Furthermore, our lines are kept open 24/7 during exam times and fresher’s week in order to provide additional support to students at times when they need it the most.

How much does it cost to contact Nightline?
Nightline is free of charge for University of Nottingham students calling from University Park halls of residence (internal number: 15759) and standard network charges apply otherwise. Our Instant Messaging, e-mail and Skype services are entirely free of charge.

Can you give me some advice?
Nightline is a listening and information service so while we are happy to talk to you about any problems you may be having and discuss your thoughts and feelings and possible courses of action, our volunteers are trained to be non-directive. This means that we will never advocate for any decisions you might make or suggest what you should do. We believe this is the most beneficial thing for our callers. If you are looking for advice on a specific issue and are not sure who to contact about it, Nightline can give you information on who to get in touch with should you request it.

I’m not a University of Nottingham or Nottingham Trent student – can I still contact Nightline?
Yes. Nightline is a service for everyone. However, we are particularly oriented to University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent students as much of our information is specific to that population.

Will you tell anyone about what we spoke about?
No. Nightline is a confidential service and the content of all our calls stays within the service at all times in order to make you feel more comfortable talking to us. The only exception to this rule is where the Terrorism Act 2000 applies.

How can I get involved with Nightline?
We recruit new volunteers twice every academic year. For more information on this, please get in touch with our Training Officers by sending them an e-mail at nightlinetraining@nottingham.ac.uk
We’re also always on the look-out for more volunteers to help publicise the service by joining our Publicity Team. For more information on getting involved with this aspect of Nightline, please visit the Publicity Team Facebook group.

How does Skype work?
To talk to one of our volunteers simply send a request to ‘nottingham.nightline’ and click ‘voice call’.
This will then forward you onto our normal phone lines. Our volunteers won’t even know you’re using Skype to call us! For further instructions see our ‘contact page’

Is Skype anonymous?
Yes. Your call will be forwarded to our phone lines and our volunteers will answer it like any other call. There is no way for our volunteers to see friend requests sent to nottingham.nightline.
You may wish to remove us from your contacts and hide the conversation in your recent call list if you are concerned about anyone seeing that you have called Nightline.
